Weeks of smoke from summer wildfires this year served as a reminder to Coloradans that many of our forests remain unhealthy and fire-prone, and that the occurrence of wildfire in natural settings is inevitable. But the risks unhealthy forests pose to life and property can be reduced. Attached and below is a news release announcing that the Colorado State Forest Service is now accepting proposals from Colorado HOAs, community groups, local governments, utilities and nonprofit organizations seeking funding to restore forested areas, improve forest health and reduce wildfire risk on non-federal land in the state. Please contact the CSFS State Office at 970-491-6303 with any questions. Thanks, Ryan

In pre-settlement days there were an estimated11 million turkeys in north America. By 1973 the population had dwindled to 1 million. In 1973 the National Wild Turkey Federation was founded and has spent more than $412 million dollars to conserve more than 17.25 million acres of habitat. Today the turkey population has grown to 7 million. "The restoration of the wild turkey is arguably the greatest conservation success story of a single species in North America's history." Ips Beetle Migrationcontributed by
Jim and I noticed a big pine tree the other day that had a bunch of beetle hits on it. When looking closer, we saw that a tree that the wind blew down was dead and had fallen onto this large pine. The dead tree had the telltale sawdust leavings of the Ips beetle. So… we want to warn Tree Farmers to watch out for dead trees. Those can attract the Ips, which then migrate to nearby healthy trees. Happy Autumn! Vicki

In a Body Farm for Trees, Scientists Root Out the Killers
Since 1982 field crews have spent summers visiting plots scattered around Sequoia National Park. Each year they record the condition of all the trees in those plots; every five years they measure the diameter of the trunks. If a tree dies, they give it an autopsy. All told, they have tracked the lives of more than 30,000 individual trees. |
